Suzie & I spent the day at the Metropolitan Opera today. It was a gorgeous day in the city. As soon as we arrived, we went straight to the opera house to pick up our tickets for Tales of Hoffmann. Then we went out for a quick lunch at PJ Clarks. Their apple crisp, by the way, is wonderful. I am glad we decided to share one. It could easily feed two to three people.
The opera was very good even though the staging was very busy. Too much was going on at the same time. The tenor, Giuseppe Filianoti, was excellent in the title role. Agnes Varis, a Met board member, donated $2.5 million to subsidize ticket to weekend productions. If you enter the lottery on Monday, you could get weekend orchestra seats for $25. It will certainly open up the theater to people who otherwise could not afford to go.
I'm so glad that the weather was so nice after all the rain we had the past two days. The weather has been strange. It was an exceptionally dry summer and, when it did rain, it was a deluge. Who ever heard of tornadoes in New York City? And 2 in one day, unthinkable.
